Why I Started My Journey in the Beauty Industry

By Zhen, Founder of Zhen Day Spa & Beauty
People often see the polished side of the beauty industry — glowing skin, luxury spa treatments, beautiful products lined up like jewels on a shelf. But behind every skincare business is a deeper story, often rooted in pain, healing, and the quiet courage to believe that transformation is possible — not just on the outside, but deep within.
For me, beauty was never about vanity. It was about dignity. I grew up in a small rural village in China where survival came before self-care. We didn’t have skincare routines or fancy lotions. We had cracked hands from hard work, sun-darkened skin from working in the fields, and aching backs at the end of every day. But still, I remember the way my mother would gently splash her face with cold water each morning, or smooth her hair back before going to the market — small, sacred acts of self-respect that stayed with me.
When I came to America, I brought very little with me — not much money, no language skills, and no idea what the future would hold. I was a young mother, newly married, trying to figure out who I was in a foreign land. Life wasn’t easy. I cleaned houses. I worked long hours. I cried quietly in the bathroom when I felt invisible. But through it all, I held onto one dream: I wanted to help others feel seen, loved, and beautiful.
The beauty industry opened that door for me. At first, I pursued it as a way to earn a living. But the deeper I went, the more I realized: skincare isn’t just about skin. It’s about healing. It’s about giving someone the gift of being cared for, without judgment, without hurry. It’s about restoring not just their glow, but their sense of worth.
I’ve had clients come to me with acne that made them afraid to go out in public. I’ve had exhausted mothers who hadn’t done anything for themselves in years. I’ve seen teenage girls come in hunched over with insecurity and walk out standing tall. I’ve seen survivors of trauma — women who’ve carried the weight of the world — finally exhale in my treatment room, and remember what it feels like to be touched with care, not pain.
And that is the heart of Zhen Day Spa & Beauty.
I started this business not to chase trends, but to create a safe space — a sanctuary — where people could come as they are and leave feeling more connected to themselves. A place where skincare is personalized, products are clean and thoughtfully chosen, and every treatment is given with intention.
Here are just a few ways I’ve seen beauty change lives:
•Confidence Restored: When your skin improves, your confidence follows. It’s not superficial — it’s deeply emotional. You start showing up for yourself again. You say yes to opportunities. You look in the mirror and see possibility, not flaws.
•Healing Through Touch: In a world that’s rushed and disconnected, compassionate touch is rare. A facial is more than a treatment — it’s a moment of stillness, of peace, of being cared for without having to give anything in return.
•Education and Empowerment: I love teaching my clients how to take care of their skin at home. I don’t just sell products — I guide them to understand what their skin needs and why, so they feel empowered, not dependent.
•Safe Space for All: Whether you’re a teenager struggling with acne, a busy parent overwhelmed with responsibilities, or someone navigating a health journey — I welcome you. My spa is a place where your story matters.
What I’ve learned over the years is this: the way we care for ourselves sets the tone for how we live our lives. When we prioritize our own well-being, even in small ways, everything starts to shift — our mindset, our energy, our relationships, our ability to dream bigger.
So yes, I started my beauty business to support my family and build a life. But it has become something much greater. It is my mission. My message. My way of helping others rise from exhaustion to empowerment, from hiding to shining.
And I want you to know — no matter what you’re facing, you deserve to feel good in your skin. You deserve to feel whole, worthy, and beautiful. Not someday. Now.
I invite you to visit Zhen Day Spa & Beauty — not just for your skin, but for your soul.
